Geography

‘Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future.’

Michael Palin

At the Skegness Academy, our Geography curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our intent is to provide students with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes, their complex interrelations, and the dynamic changes over time and space. We strive to develop informed and responsible global citizens capable of critical thinking about issues such as climate change, urbanisation, and sustainable development.

To achieve our goals, the curriculum is structured to provide students with a deep understanding of geographical concepts, processes, and skills. It aims to cultivate an appreciation for the variety of environments, cultures, and economies, while also promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Additionally, the curriculum seeks to instil a sense of environmental and societal responsibility and to prepare students for further education and careers in geography and related fields.

Our implementation strategies include a structured learning pathway that builds on prior knowledge and progressively deepens understanding from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4. We utilise engaging content through various teaching methods, including fieldwork, case studies, and project-based learning, to make geography relevant and interesting. Emphasis is placed on developing geographical skills such as map reading, data analysis, and enquiry. We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, connecting geographical learning with other subjects, particularly science and history, for a holistic understanding of global issues. Regular assessments and constructive feedback ensure students understand their progress and areas for improvement. Additionally, we offer extracurricular activities, including field trips, to enrich students' learning experiences.

Through these strategies, the Skegness Academy ensures that our Geography curriculum is dynamic, inclusive, and effective in preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.
