Equality

The Academy recognises that its community is made up of a broad range of individuals and groups with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, lifestyles, languages and cultures.  The Academy is committed to the principle that all pupils should be treated with dignity and respect.

The Equality Act 2010 was introduced to ensure protection from discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of specific characteristics (referred to as protected characteristics). For schools, this means that it is unlawful to discriminate against ‘protected characteristics’ identified as gender; race; age; disability; religion or belief; gender reassignment; sexual orientation; pregnancy or maternity.

Under the Act, the school is expected to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED). This requires us to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity between different groups
  • Foster good relations between different groups

The Academy has recently invested in a suite of resources to be used as part of the pastoral curriculum around promoting equality and raising awareness of discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

At the Skegness Academy, we are proud of our Trust wide Equality Objectives, which are:

  • To reduce and ultimately eliminate any incidences of discriminatory behaviour towards people with a protected characteristic.
  • To improve consultation and involvement of pupils with a protected characteristic through the representation of their views on the Student Council and through Student Voice and tutor activities.
  • To establish Academy projects/initiatives aimed at promoting a continuous improvement of the relationships between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

The GAT Equalities Policy is in line with national guidance and contains information about how the school complies with the Public Sector Equality Duty. We also give guidance to staff and the wider school community on our approach to promoting equality. This includes ‘advancing equality’ which means ensuring shared opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

The Trust is committed to equality of opportunity and access, for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, cultural background, sexual orientation or any form of Special Need and will strive to allow all members (who work or study at the Trust’s premises) to achieve their full potential.

Our Equality Objectives reflect the school's priorities.  The Academy incorporates the topic of equality into the curriculum as well as through the pastoral and moral curriculum.  Careful analysis of this is undertaken in order to ensure that we are working to achieve improved outcomes for different groups and to ensure it is engaging and relevant.
