Young Carers

Young Carers

Here at Skegness Academy we are so proud of our amazing Young Carers. We acknowledge the increased responsibilities Young Carers have away from school which can impact upon school attendance, their wellbeing and socialising with their peers.

In order to support we offer a wide range interventions within school which are delivered by our dedicated Young Carers Leads.

The Young Carers Leads at Skegness Academy are:

What is a young carer?

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to care for a family member, relative or friend. A young person aged 16-25 with caring responsibilities can be known as a young adult carer.

As many as 1 in 5 children and young people are young carers in the UK.  

Young carers often do a lot of helpful things, such as: 

  • Cook and prepare meals 
  • Help with the shopping 
  • Clean around the house 
  • Manage medicines or money 
  • Give personal care 
  • Help their special person move and get out of the house 
  • Look after their siblings 
  • Give emotional support  
  • Keep an eye on things generally

How we support

  • Weekly Young Carers Drop-In sessions every Monday Lunch time
  • Termly Young Carers sessions
  • Trips
  • Prize Draws
  • Promote community based Young Carers groups and events

Each Young Carer and their circumstances are unique and often there is a need for us to consider other supportive intervention.
